Summary:
Every morning for the past two weeks, they’ve met to watch the sun rising over the sea before taking advantage of the empty beach to run the full length of it. Despite the burning in his lungs, Namjoon has never felt more alive.
Written for the
scintilla__fest writing challenge, round nine: Vigor.
Namjoon is half a chapter away from finally finishing the book he’s been trying to read for a while when he’s interrupted.
“Hyung!”
The happy shout makes Namjoon’s head jerk up, immediately losing his place, but he’s not mad. He can feel his face stretching into a grin before he even turns around.
“Good morning,” he says when Jungkook is closer. The smile he gets in return is as blinding as the sun that’s just rising over the waves.
He looks Jungkook over — he’s wearing what Namjoon has come to know as his typical attire for his morning runs. Their morning runs, rather. No point in denying it anymore, he guesses.
They’ve met every morning for the past two weeks just like this, Namjoon sat alone on the cold sands and reading, until Jungkook shows up to drag him into being active.
The very first time, Namjoon had been skeptical of a stranger approaching him, dreading his day already being interrupted by well-meaning fans, but the only indication Jungkook had any idea he was talking to RM and not just a fellow weirdo up at six in the morning were the wide eyes and the way his speech had stuttered at first. Somehow, Namjoon had found himself charmed by the younger man and allowed himself to be dragged along.
Since then, Namjoon's collected a small treasure of facts about one Jeon Jungkook:
One, he is an actual athlete. He’d let that slip two days in when Namjoon, panting and half-convinced he was never going to breathe properly again, had asked him why he was up at dawn to torture himself like that. Jungkook had said it offhand, only to blanch and then immediately change the subject. Later, Namjoon had looked him up on Naver — and no wonder he hadn’t made a big deal about Namjoon. South Korea’s rising star, predicted to make big waves at the next Olympics, the Golden Maknae Jeon Jungkook. He’d closed the search results and they hadn’t talked about it, but Namjoon had let himself relax even more.
Two, he, just like Namjoon, is all the way out here to briefly hide away from the world. Well, rest and recharge is what Namjoon had said to Yoongi before leaving Seoul, but the sentiment stands and Jungkook had agreed with his phrasing.
Three, he thinks getting up at five-thirty to run the full length of the beach is a fun and relaxing start of the day. Namjoon had called him insane the first time he’d said that, and Jungkook had just laughed at him before getting back to his lunch. (So maybe they don’t just meet in the mornings. Sue him.)
Four, he has a way of looking at Namjoon when he speaks that sends Namjoon’s heart beating faster than it ever has off the stage.
Five, Namjoon had barely stopped himself from kissing him yesterday because of it and a million other things he’s noticed in the short time they’ve known each other.
Okay, the last one isn’t actually about Jungkook. But it’s true and likely why there’s relief in his eyes right now.
“Wasn’t sure if you were going to be here,” he says, dragging Namjoon away from his musings. The tone is carefully neutral and when he looks at him, Jungkook is biting his lip and facing pointedly towards the sea.
Namjoon lets out an agreeing sound, trying to collect his thoughts. He’d prepared for this before coming, but on actually seeing Jungkook his words have all but disappeared.
Ah, what the hell.
“I wasn’t sure either, to be honest,” he says finally. Now they’re both watching the sun slowly lift out of the sea instead of each other. “But I figured that wouldn’t be fair, to you or me. I told you I don’t like taking risks, but—” he hastily continues when he spies Jungkook’s expression start to fall, “—but I don’t feel like this is a risk. Although we barely just met, I feel like I’ve known you for a long time. I’m sorry for leaving so suddenly yesterday. I do like you. A lot.”
The silence after he finishes stretches infinitely. Namjoon forces himself to not fidget. He’d spent the whole day fretting about what to do and he knew he had to let Jungkook come to his own decision now.
“I like you too, hyung.” Jungkook huffs. “Don’t expect me to make a whole speech though, I can’t match that.”
Namjoon laughs, in both relief and happiness. “I would never.”
They turn away from the now fully-risen sun and just look at each other for a moment.
“Can I kiss you now or are you going to run away again?” Jungkook asks at last, the smile on his face letting Namjoon know he’s teasing. He still winces; he’s probably never living that down.
“Yes. I couldn’t outrun you anyway, so—”
The rest of the sentence is lost as Jungkook’s lips touch his. What was probably intended as a quick, innocent kiss quickly picks up steam when Namjoon gasps at the feeling. There are fingers in his hair, tugging slightly and making a groan build up in his throat. He suddenly can’t keep his own hands away from Jungkook and finds himself running them across his shoulders.
They stay like that for… how long, Namjoon isn’t actually sure. When they separate to breathe, he can’t stop his face from forming a wide smile. The same expression is mirrored on Jungkook’s face.
“Still here,” he says because he can’t help it. Jungkook just hums and continues smiling. Namjoon feels himself growing awkward and almost looks away. Instead, he clears his throat a little and prays he isn’t too red. “So, what now?”
Jungkook’s face suddenly becomes mischievous.
“Last one buys breakfast!” he yells as he takes off, picking up speed quickly. Namjoon’s mouth falls open — did he really just? — before he laughs a little. He supposes he deserves that.
Predictably, he loses, but it’s not like he minds. It’s a great day.
